In the past nine months, we have not posted a lot, yet we have done a great deal for the kids here in Praia do Tupe. In the context of the project “Capoeira for Kids,” we run every Sunday throughout the year, no matter what challenges we are facing. Currently, the Amazonas is experiencing its second drought in succession, which is already becoming more extreme than it was last time, occurring even four weeks earlier than in 2023.
Despite all odds, our ContraMestre Wilson drives for 2.5 hours each way every Sunday to reach a location on the other side of the river, where we pick him up by boat. He practically has to wake up around 3:30 AM to check out of his apartment by 4:00 AM. By 7:00 AM, he is usually here in Tupe. He buys and brings the ingredients for the kids’ breakfast, while Umussy organizes and prepares the infrastructure, coffee, and cold water.
During the drought, the kids have to walk about 3 km through desert, mud, and heat to get to the location where breakfast starts. From there, they walk another 3 km back to the training site. After the training, they will have a little refreshment at the local lake, followed by a hearty lunch fully organized and paid by our Association. The protein part of the lunch is donated by MyTheo, Germany. Around 1:00 PM, the kids are free to go home and enjoy the rest of their day.
From time to time also hold Capoeira events where some of the well-known old Capoeira Masters are joining our location. Please enjoy the photo collection.
We hope that our initiative for the kids helps them develop their sports- and social-skills while ensuring they have some fun. Please feel free, if you would like, to support our cause with a donation.
